In May 2023, Danau Girang Field Centre suffered the loss of Mr Peter Riger, a close friend and one of our biggest supporters. Peter was a humble conservationist and an amazing human being who strongly believed in people working on the ground. In his role of VP of Conservation and Education of the Houston Zoo, Texas, USA, Peter dedicated his life to aid many environmental organizations that protect wildlife around the world. Thus, he became a mentor for many at the field centre, as well as a great friend.

In his memory, we have dedicated the Peter Riger Conservation Area: 10Ha of High Conservation Value to be restored in an oil palm plantation close to the Danau Girang Field Centre. The site is inhabited by leopard and flat-headed cats as well as by smooth-coated otters, species that were close to Peter’s heart. This Campaign aims to fund the restoration of the first hectare in this forest
